 HYDRAULICS LABORATORY:

The Hydraulics Laboratory was established from the inception of Civil Engineering department. It contains a floor area of 224.3 Sq.Metres. The Laboratory is fully equipped with all necessary equipment along with their accessories, as required for B.E Civil, Automobile engineering and Mechanical Engineering courses in the syllabus. The Laboratory has been kept with pace of modern technological advancements by purchasing new equipment as and when required. The laboratory includes Flow measurement set-ups and Turbo Machines. The laboratory experiments include the study of open channel flow, closed conduit flow, pump and turbine characteristics which enhance the students to acquire thorough knowledge on the practical utility of these devices in the field.

STRENGTH OF MATERIALS LABORATORY:

The strength of materials laboratory measuring an area of 111.32 sq.m. was established at the time of starting of Civil Engineering Department in the year 2012. This laboratory is fully equipped with all necessary machines with accessories for conducting lab. Classes for the under-graduate courses in Civil and Mechanical Engineering. This laboratory has equipments and tools worth Rs.27.79 lakhs which include Universal Testing Machine computerized & servo control of 1000 KN capacity . Besides, there are number of other equipment like Hardness testing machines, muffle Furnace , Electronic extensometer, compresometer,   Spring testing machine, Torsion testing machines,  Impact testing machine, etc. available for the regular practical classes. Sophisticated equipments are being periodically purchased to modernize the laboratory and also to train the students. This laboratory is one of the premier laboratories for the purpose of Consultancy and Testing works. Almost all government agencies and private organizations in and around Dindigul have access to this laboratory for consultancy / testing services.

GEOTECHNICAL ENGINEERING LABORATORY:

The Geotechnical Engineering laboratory was established in 2013. The laboratory is equipped with all modern machineries required for advanced research and consultancy services. All the equipment’s mentioned in the syllabus content of the undergraduate programme can be carried out in the laboratory. The area of the laboratory is 167.25 Sq.m. The total cost of the equipment’s around Rs.14.20 lakhs which includes triaxial compression testing apparatus, direct shear test apparatus and unconfined compression testing apparatus. Facilities to conduct field tests like Plate Load Test and Standard Penetration Test are available.

ENVIRONMENTAL ENGINEERING LABORATORY:

The Environmental Engineering Laboratory is well equipped with Specialized instruments like COD Digester, Muffle furnace, Hot Air Oven, Kjeldhal apparatus, Ion Analyzer, Digital pH meter, Turbidity meter, Conductivity meter, BOD Incubator, Flame Photometer, Jar Test Apparatus and Spectrophotometer to meet the academic requirements of undergraduate programme and for full-fledged consultancy activities in the field of water quality analysis.

SURVEYING LABORATORY:

The Surveying Laboratory is equipped with the instruments and tools that students use throughout the surveying course. Students learn techniques for gathering field data with both traditional and modern instruments and demonstrate their proficiency on weekly lab exercises and a comprehensive mini project and final exam. Each lab group – typically four students – has a dedicated set of instruments to use, including Dumpy level, theodolite, and total station. Each group also has leveling staffs, tripods, tape, chain and other common surveying tools. The lab also serves as office space for the surveying instructor and teaching assistants, so surveying students have direct access to help for material discussed in lecture and lab. In addition, students have opportunity to use total station, GPS, Digital level equipment which enables horizontal vertical and angular measurements in single operation.

CADD LABORATORY:

The CADD centre provides a modern facility for instruction in a variety of computer software packages. The Lab has equipped with more than 70 Computer Systems with high end latest Configuration hardware. The software available includes STAAD Pro, REVIT Architecture, AutoCAD, RESIST and QGIS.

CONCRETE AND HIGHWAYS LABORATORY:

This laboratory contains different equipments used to categorize concrete and bitumen binders in terms of their properties and quality control and provides an additional exposure to the testing of construction materials for the Civil Engineering students. The major equipments available in the laboratory are Aggregate Impact test machine, Los Angel’s Abrasion Testing machine, Deval abrasion testing machine, Aggregate Crushing Machine for finding the material properties. Slump cone, Flow table, Vee-Bee constiometer, and Compaction factor are used for finding workability on fresh concrete likewise Compressive, flexural, split tensile strength, modulus of elasticity of harden concrete also tested in this laboratory. Standard penetrometer, Ring and Ball apparatus, Standard Tar viscometer, Ductility testing machine for bitumen, Marshall Apparatus, Bitumen Centrifuge Extractor is used for finding bitumen property. Consultancy for various construction firms are done widely in this lab. Thus a hand on exposure to these tests assists the students to expertise themselves to be a civil engineer with better confidence and assessment skills.
